An Historic Farm
Rush Farm has a long history, with mentions in the Domesday book and a 700 year old farm house - in fact we still have areas of ancient woodland and beautiful ridge & furrow fields. In the 1960's Rush Farm inspired the cult radio drama The Archers with the the farm and its inhabitants providing the basis for Brookfield. The first episodes were even recorded in the farmhouse, and the current farm team often find themselves in the Old Bull for refreshment after a hard day's work!
Rush Farm Today
Today Rush Farm consists of around 160 acres of lush pasture and 20 acres of woodland. We are very proud to be a flagship Biodynamic and organic farm, and have worked hard to restore our fields after many years of intensive farming so that the land has become both a haven for wildlife and a carbon sink while still producing delicious food. We sell our meat through organic farm shops and local suppliers, as well as running a produce box scheme where you can buy Rush Farm meat, veggies and flowers direct. Our new courses offer you a chance to learn about sustainable farming, cooking and woodcraft while spending time at our beautiful farm.
Our Animals
Hereford Cattle
Hereford cattle are known for their kindly temperament and excellent mothering. They are smaller than modern commercial cattle and with a slower growth rate produce the most delicious meat. We keep the horns on our cows as they are an integral part of making our biodynamic compost preparations.
Lleyn Sheep
Lleyn sheep hail from north-west Wales and are an excellent, hardy breed that make excellent mothers. All our animals are pasture fed and the sheep stay out in the field for all but a week or so of the year.
Shetland Sheep
Much smaller than commercial sheep, we started our new Shetland flock to provide sustainable wool fibres. Shetlands are known for their very soft wool and beautiful colouration. As an added bonus they have huge personalities and are always up for having a tickle!
